      PMI Volunteers

      COME JOIN THE FUN.

ESF only has three full-time staff members, so we rely heavily on our amazing volunteers.

Group volunteer shifts are made available to our sponsors as a way to thank them for their financial support.

All volunteer shifts take place at our warehouse (693 Humphries St., SW Atlanta, GA 30310) unless otherwise noted.

Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email with important information and details about your volunteer event (be sure to check your spam folder). Please remember, each individual must register separately.

From April through September volunteers help with all aspects of school supply kit assembly, from opening and sorting product to packing supplies into backpack kits, and fill online store orders from teachers and our Nonprofit Procurement Partners.

From October through December, volunteers pick and pack holiday gift orders.

From January through March, volunteers help clean up, organize and inventory the warehouse so we can do it all again!

      Volunteer FAQ

Where is the ESF warehouse located?

The Empty Stocking Fund is located at 693 Humphries Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30310.

      Is parking available?

Parking is available inside of the fence and in front of the building. While the main entry door is at the top of the stairs, a wheelchair accessible ramp is available inside of the fence.

What should I wear and bring to volunteer at ESF?

DRESS COMFORTABLY! Our warehouse is not climate controlled and can be a little hot on summer afternoons and a little cool in the winter. We suggest comfortable, closed-toe shoes and layers, when appropriate. Please feel free to wear branded attire from your company or organization if you’d like and of course, festive attire is always welcomed during the holiday season.

Due to very limited secured storage space, please minimize the loose valuables (purse, bags, etc.) that you bring into the warehouse. We are not responsible for any personal items that might be lost while you are volunteering at ESF.

What should I do once I arrive at the warehouse?

Proceed to the Volunteer Check-In area where a volunteer supervisor will check you in and give you an assignment.

What will I be doing during my volunteer shift?

      • From April through September, volunteers help with all aspects of school supply kit assembly, from opening and sorting products to packing supplies into backpack kits, and filling online store orders from teachers and our Nonprofit Procurement Partners.
      • From October through December, volunteers pick and pack holiday gift orders.
      • From January through March, volunteers help clean up, organize and inventory the warehouse so we can do it all again!

Can I bring my child to volunteer?

Sure, we welcome youth volunteers who are at least 10 years of age! But for safety reasons, volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Will there be any food or beverages available?

The Empty Stocking Fund spends every dollar we possibly can on toys, gifts, and school supplies so we are unable to provide food and drinks for volunteers. We do have bottled water on site and if you would like to bring food and drink (or have it delivered), you are welcome to do so. We have a volunteer break area with tables and chairs, a refrigerator and a microwave available for your use.

Are there any COVID safety protocols I should know about?

Masks are optional when volunteering in the ESF warehouse. We do ask that volunteers who are not feeling well, are testing positive for COVID, or have been exposed to someone with COVID within five days of their volunteer shift to refrain from entering the warehouse. If you are experiencing any of the following, please cancel your volunteer registration and plan to join us when you have recovered from these symptoms:

      • Fever
      • Cough
      • Shortness of Breath
      • Cold- or Flu-Like Symptoms
      • Loss off Smell/Taste
      • Nausea

      Does ESF accept donated items?

The uniqueness of ESF is that we purchase new school supplies, toys, and gifts in bulk to distribute to local children – this ensures the consistency and quality of the items we offer families in need. While we don’t accept donations of individual items, you’re welcomed to sponsor a child or raise funds for ESF at any time throughout the year.

Who do I contact if I need to cancel my shift or have questions about volunteering?

If you need to cancel your volunteer shift, please use the link in your confirmation email to access your personal volunteer page and make any necessary changes. Should you have additional questions about volunteering at ESF, please contact Joy Graham at [email protected].

On behalf of the 30,000 students who receive Student Supply Kits, the 2,000 teachers at Title I schools who are given an opportunity to shop for more than $500 in supplies and materials for their classrooms, and the parents and guardians of the 30,000 children who receive holiday gifts from The Empty Stocking Fund each holiday season, thank you for your support!

        STOPPING THE SPREAD,
        BUT NOT THE SUPPORT

The Empty Stocking Fund is committed to protecting the health and safety of our volunteers, staff and community. In response to the COVID19 pandemic, we have implemented strict policies that adhere to federal and state guidelines.

        Social Distancing
ESF will follow Social Distancing Guidelines based on CDC recommendations.

Currently, volunteer shift sizes are limited so participants can safely socially distance.  Because we have a large space and can easily separate groups, we may schedule two small groups at the same time.

Social Distancing markers and signage will be posted throughout the facility.

        Temperature Screening
Using no-contact infrared digital thermometers, ESF staff will check the temperature of all volunteers before they enter the building. Following the CDC guidelines, anyone with a temperature above 100.4 will be asked to leave and reschedule their volunteer shift (a minimum of 14 days later).

        Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
Masks will be required in the facility at all times. If you have your own mask, please bring it with you.  If you do not have a mask, we will provide one for you.  In addition, we will have gloves and plenty of hand sanitizer available.

        Post-Shift Facility Cleaning and Sanitization
Designated trash cans are placed in the warehouse and the lobby for PPE disposal and will be emptied immediately at the end of each shift.

Volunteers will be asked to place all tape guns, box cutters, and other tools used in a designated area so that they can be disinfected by staff.

All surfaces will be cleaned using a CDC approved disinfectant.

        Post Shift Reporting
Approximately two weeks after your shift, ESF will send you an email asking you to confirm that you have not been diagnosed with or experienced symptoms of Covid19. Should you have any concerns about your exposure before, during or after your shift, we ask that you contact us immediately at (404) 876-8697.

        SPONSOR -A- CHILD CAMPAIGNS

Sponsor-A-Child Campaigns enable individuals and organizations to maximize their impact by enlisting the support of others.  Campaigns may be led at local businesses, global corporations, civic or religious organizations, or simply among friends and family. Some raise hundreds of dollars while others raise thousands, and each does it a little differently.  It can be as simple as creating an online donation page and sharing it via email or social media, or as complex as hosting fundraising events like holiday parties, bake sales, raffles, etc.  As a campaign leader, YOU decide what works best for you and your organization.

        JROTC DRIVE

        Young People Helping Young People

Every year more than 2,500 cadets representing 40 metro Atlanta high school ROTC programs take to the street to share The Empty Stocking Fund’s story and collect donations on our behalf. This long-standing tradition that dates back to the 1940s was established based on the community spirit of young people helping young people. Over a two-day period, thousands of volunteers, most of whom are JROTC cadets from metro-Atlanta high schools, collect donations throughout their communities. Representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, the cadets raise nearly $100,000 for the organization – enough to provide gift packages to 5,000 children.

Through its Family2Family project, WSB-TV supports the cadets’ efforts by increasing awareness of the program. As one of the project’s sponsors, Kroger allows the cadets to fundraise onsite at more than 50 metro area stores.
